Your Personal Tutor

I used to be a teacher for more than 20 years in my native country, and I hadn’t been a student for ages until I enrolled in English Center of International Women at Mills College. I’m so grateful that I can be a student again. In addition, I met a high quality teacher, Deborah Brooks. In the first class she impressed me. She is tall with a dignified smile. Her voice is full of energy and confidence. Right away, I sensed that she is a good teacher. In the following semester, just as expected, she turned out to be a wonderful professional teacher.

As my teaching experience, a good teacher should be knowledgeable in her specialized field and have a personality of enthusiasm and devotion. Deborah has both of these two conditions. She is a resourceful (or creative) and versatile teacher. In her class, the whole morning felt like just half an hour, you never felt bored. In the grammar class, she explained very clearly and lively. I was like a sponge absorbing her erudite instruction. In class, she distributed the time very efficiently. When we separated in small groups to practice what we learned about grammar structure, she always walked around to correct the mistakes we made. She was very responsible and just. She gave equal patience to every student. She handled the class atmosphere enthusiastically. Everyone participated in and enjoyed learning. In writing, I usually spent more than 10 hours writing each essay and was agonized. She encouraged me by giving me positive feedback on my essays. With her enthusiastic teaching style and encouraging attitude, I felt much less afraid of writing essays. She corrected essays very carefully and seriously. She typed all the mistakes on a sheet and guided us to discuss and rethink it again in class. Generally speaking the listening and speaking class is harder than the grammar class. To make it interesting, Deborah’s versatile teaching method in the class made us have a lot of fun. One example, we watched TV program without sound. At first, half of us guess and describe the action to another classmate. After took turns we watched it again with the sound on. She pushed us keep going to practice to speak out, it’s hard for a person who speaks limited English. Then she expanded the slang (idioms or expressions) or American culture that the movie mentioned. Another example, she taught us American history and tradition by singing songs. I never forget the melody and feeling about “America the beautiful” and “This land is your land” These experiences evoke my motivation to identify with this beautiful country.

From her teaching you can learn about Christian’s indiscriminate love. She is against racial discrimination. She believes deeply that all humans are equal. She is just and loyal. She doesn’t like the fact a politician’s words and deeds are not in accord. (or say one thing and do another,) We highly appreciate her zeal for helping new emigrants. Even though some of us older than her, but she regards us as her children. She is not just only our English teacher but also a mentor. I have deep respect for her in my heart. I’ll never forget her teaching.

我的英文老師「黛博拉布克斯」

我在台灣擔任教職二十八載，我的工作地點是台北縣永和市永平中學。教育是樹人的天職，「情」及「義」是為人及為師的基本本分及義務。以我身為教師的經驗，我認為一個好老師應該是具備淵博的專業知識及技術，
和一份奉獻的熱忱及愛人的情操。我移居美國三年，去年有幸做她的學生，享受到學習的樂趣，也確實在英文能力上有實質的收穫，我樂意為她推薦，希望更多的人透過她的教導，能迅速在英文能力上成長，可以
加速適應新的生活環境，以下是我所認識的黛博拉老師。

一、教學風格

(一) 多樣化，多才多藝

我在課堂中是應接不暇的吸收她十八般武藝的教學。

(二) 緊湊扎實

時間如梭，三小時的教學一晃而過，我有滿滿一籮筐的收穫，返家再反芻複習。

二、人格特質

(一) 仔細認真批改作業

作文對我而言是很大的壓力，但她都給我正面的回饋及鼓勵，使我在寫作的能力

上向前邁進了一大步。

(二) 接納性高，公平而正直

她有基督徒的博愛精神，她反對種族歧視，她深深認為人類生而平等，她痛恨政

客的虛偽不實及言行不一。她熱忱的為英文有限的新移民奉獻心力。

(三) 精力旺盛而熱忱

她上課充滿活力，四射的熱力環繞著我們，使我們自然融入學習之中。我們不但

學英文，也從她身上認識到這片土地當初的立國精神。她是一位有為有守的教師。

她，黛博拉，不但是我的英文老師，也是一位模範的人格導師，我尊敬她。

Меня зовут Римма Щукина. Я приехала в США летом 2001 года из Минска. Осенью я стала учить английский и попала в класс, где преподавала Дебора Брокс. Она замечательный учитель. Ее стиль и методика преподавания облегчают процесс усвоения материала. Грамматические правила в изложении Деборы просты и понятны. Огромный опыт в совокупности с глубокими знаниями, доступная манера объяснения в комплексе с неординарными человеческими качествами характеризуют Дебору как непревзойденного мастера своего дела. Это мнение не только мое, но и любого студента единожды побывавшего на ее уроках. Если Вы хотите изучить английский язык и ищете хорошего преподавателя, то я рекомендую обратиться к Деборе Брокс, она Учитель от Бога.

私が彼女と出会ったのは１９９７年、ミルズカレッジのＥＳＬででした。　大学卒業後、すぐに留学した私は「英語は今まで何年も学校で勉強してきたから、少しぐらい分かる」と思い授業に挑みました。　しかし、英語だけの授業について行けず、内容がさっぱり分かりません。　ホームシックも重なり、かなり落ち込みました。　そんな時にデボラのクラスでの出来事です。　ある日、クラスにトイレットペーパーとペーパーシートを持ってきて「これをあなたの国ではどのように使いますか？」と聞くのです。　びっくりしました。　国によってはトイレでペーパー以外を使用する所もあるとのこと。　生徒は意表をついた授業に驚きつつも、あっという間に彼女のペースにはまってしまいました。　その他、授業中にギターを弾いたりゲームを取り入れたりと、ユニークな方法で授業を進めていきました。　生徒に興味を持たせ、発言させる。　そこからいろいろな表現方法を学んでいくのです。　　

クラスには様々な国の生徒がいましたが、　彼女はそれぞれの国のタイプを知っています。　例えば日本人生徒は自ら発言する事が他の国の生徒と比べると少ないのですが、　発言しやすいように誘導してくれました。　また文法やライティングでも本人が分かるまで、細かく、根気よく教えてくれました。　授業の時以外に質問を持っていっても、忙しいにもかかわらず、嫌な顔一つせず接してくれました。　気軽に話し掛けられる、そして彼女の忍耐強い、きめ細かな指導はどの国の生徒からも評判でした。　彼女を見ていると、本当に教える事が好きなのだと感じます。　教師は彼女の天職であり、私が最も尊敬する教師の一人です。　デボラのおかげも有り、アメリカでカレッジを卒業後、念願の旅行会社に就職できました。　

これから彼女を通じて英語を学ばれる方、分からない事は遠慮せずに納得するまで質問されてください。　彼女の徹底した指導で、必ず身についていくと思います。
